Interministerial Council for the Sustainable Food System

Institutional set-up and structure
The Council was established by Resolution No. 64/2024 through the Prime Minister's Office as an interdisciplinary body with a supporting unit. Its activities are funded from the state budget.
Mandate and decision-making power
The Council’s purpose is to promote the discussion, formulation, implementation and validation of public policies for the sustainable food system. Its functions include coordinating policy on food production, distribution, access and consumption and the environmental questions attached to agriculture, fisheries and food; defining food and nutrition security priorities, including for emergencies; approving policies and strategies and coordinating their integrated implementation; and providing the financial and human resources to prioritise their delivery.
The Council is tasked with the following roles:
Agenda setting: deciding on goals and strategic priorities
Policy formulation and decision making: coordinating policy development; deciding and enacting policies
Implementation: coordinating policy and programme delivery; coordinating financial resources and the budget
Who is involved
Government: the Prime Minister, with the members of government responsible for agriculture and environment; commerce, industry and energy; health; family, inclusion and social development; finance; education; and the sea.
Non-state actors are not involved.
How it works in practice
Meets twice a year in ordinary session, and in extraordinary session when convened by its president or at the request of a majority of members
